ABOUT NCREIF

Established in 1982

“Darn it, I intuitively believe that equity real estate is a superior hedge against high rates of unanticipated inflation, that over time it can produce competitive real rates of return, and that it will assist in lowering overall portfolio volatility. Now, how do I convince an investment committee that our pension fund should allocate up to 15 percent of plan assets to equity real estate without any quantitative material to support my intuition?…What I need is a real estate index. Find me the real estate equivalent of the S&P 500.”
This was the comment made by a corporate pension officer to NCREIF's Founder, Blake Eagle, that gave Blake a vision of what the real estate industry was in dire need of, and he was determined to supply it to them. In 1982, NCREIF was born.

Mission Statement

NCREIF is a member-driven, not-for-profit association that improves private real estate investment industry knowledge by providing transparent and consistent data, performance measurement, analytics, standards and education.

Our Culture

NCREIF is a member-driven organization of key professionals representing multiple operational disciplines from each member firm.
We operate through a function-specific committee structure that represents each firm's primary operational disciplines and that serves to generate the initiatives that become the priorities of NCREIF's staff.
We are committed to a collaborative, supportive culture toward the advancement of industry transparency, best practices and professionalism.
We are mindful of the important role NCREIF plays in the industry's information infrastructure and aspire to operate to the highest standards.

We are governed by a Board of Directors comprised of industry leaders of their respective disciplines who have also demonstrated a long-standing commitment to NCREIF and its role in our industry.

In Practice

Representative of the initiatives that are being pursued by NCREIF's members and staff to advance our mission are:
Expanding our offering of Indices and benchmarks based on the data collected; Using state-of-the-art, user-friendly technology to deliver aggregated data and attribution analyses to members and subscribers; Developing a series of analytic tools for use by members to analyze and develop insights from the data; Enhancing our educational offerings and introducing a certification program; Continuing to increase our membership;
Facilitating the ongoing development of the Reporting Standards; Encouraging the constant use of agreed-upon standards and best practices by our members; Promoting and supporting a thriving committee structure; Building the NCREIF brand within the investment community; and Working with other organizations, within the US and globally, that have a similar mission.
